Somali militants say Canadian recruit killed

A young Canadian Muslim recruited to fight for the creation of an Islamic state has died in combat in Somalia, the Somalia-based hardline Shebab militia said Thursday in a Youtube posting.

The video shows a man described as Mohamed al-Muhajiri at a historic site in Saudi Arabia, and claims "our dear brother Mohamed was (a) mountain and in battle he was firm and calm rushing toward death."

"The towering mountain is an example to all of us so take his advice and join the ranks of the Mujahideen (freedom fighters)."

The daily Globe and Mail identified the man as Mohamed Elmi Ibrahim, a Toronto student and one of six Somali-Canadians believed to have joined the Al-Qaeda-linked militia in recent months.

Ibrahim made a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia more than a year ago, but did not return with his traveling companions, said the newspaper, citing members of the Toronto Somali community.

The video made no mention of how or where he died.

Shebab, spelled Al-Shabaab in Canada, was listed as a terrorist group in Canada effective March 5.
